Development of the territory of former military base in Karmėlava

Master's, Tutor: Vidmantas Minkevičius

Lithuania is home to numerous abandoned and underutilized spaces, which hold significant potential for revitalization and reuse. However, current urban development strategies often overlook these areas due to a lack of direct investment and architectural focus. The research targets this gap by developing a user-centered design framework based on empirical studies, including sociological surveys and analysis of social, emotional, and physical indicators. This framework aims to create adaptable, functional spaces that cater to community needs. The former Karmėlava military missile base serves as a case study, highlighting the urban challenges these areas present. The experimental project consists of three parts: an in-depth site analysis, the application of alternative design solutions, and a development model aimed at testing the proposed strategies. This research-based approach offers universal design guidelines for repurposing abandoned spaces, contributing to sustainable urban growth and enhancing the quality of life in such areas.
